Agafay, Morocco’s secret desert
The Agafay Desert, Marrakesh’ hidden gem
Nestled only 40 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh, the Agafay Desert offers an extraordinary escape from the vibrant city. Unlike the famous golden dunes of the Sahara, Agafay’s landscape is a rocky, lunar expanse, often referred to as a “stone desert.”
The proximity from Marrakesh and the variety of amazing activities and luxury camps you can find here, make Agafay one of the ultimate hotspots around the red city.
Why visit the Agafay desert?
- Stunning Landscapes: The Agafay Desert’s terrain is a blend of hills, dramatic rocky plateaus, and occasional oases. If you’re lucky you’ll experience one of the most magical sunsets of your life here.
- Proximity to Marrakech: At only a 40-kilometer drive, this desert is the perfect day trip or overnight excursionfor visitors staying in Marrakech. No need for long journeys to enjoy a desert experience. Are you travelling with younger kids, then Agafay is the perfect alternative to a Sahara visit.
- Activities for Every Adventurer: Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Agafay has something for everyone. Enjoy camel rides, quad biking, or horseback riding. After a fascinating day you can unwind at one of the luxury desert camps, where you can enjoy a traditional Moroccan meal, sit around the camp fire and stargaze at night.
Is the Agafay desert a real desert?
The Agafay Desert is not a true desert like the Sahara, as it does not feature extensive sand dunes or meet the strict definition of a desert ecosystem. Instead, it is often referred to as a “stone desert.” Its dry and resembles a desert environment, making it a popular alternative for those who cannot travel to the Sahara.
How to reach the Agafay?
We’re happy to arrange a private transfer from your riad in Marrakesh to your desert camp. We advise to arrive in the late afternoon so you can enjoy one of the desert adventures such as a quad or buggy ride, camel trekking or horseback riding.
On the way from Marrakesh to Agafay there are many experiences you shouldn’t miss out on such as an immersive cooking class on the countryside. It’s also a great idea to combine your visit to Agafay with a visit to Imlil, the Berber town which is known for being the starting point to climb the Toubkal mountain.
We can customize your private excursion and add different experiences to the program so you can experience the two most magical days just outside of Marrakesh.
Lalla Takerkoust, a hidden gem
For those who seek a more tranquil, off-the-beaten-path experience, we advise spending a night in an amazing 4*desert camp in Lalla Takerkoust. Lalla Takerkoust, surrounded by a giant lake, offers views over the stone desert and the snow-peaked Atlas Mountains.
It’s one of our favorite places found in Morocco to relax and unwind after a few days in the Imperial City of Marrakesh.
The camp offers a stunning swimming pool and gym, overlooking the High Atlas. The camp is a great starting point of many trekkings and hikes and is an absolute hotspot for adrenaline seekers since you can book an adventurous paraglide season.
